Art Journal Emporium - Mobile Art Creates Happy Accidents December 30 2015, 0 Comments

This month’s Mobile Art Challenge was tons of fun for me because it was a perfect example of what I call a “happy accident’. I think what I love about mobile art the most is that it’s low pressure and it’s all about discovery. No matter where you start there’s always a surprise waiting to be discovered as you keep layering the effects of one app on top of the other.

This month I used the highlighters in a note taking app called Noteshelf to make a doodle wreath. It took me a few tries to make a wreath that I liked and as it turned out - simplicity was best. All I did was change the colors and make dots with the Noteshelf highlighters in repeating circles.

The magic happened when I saved my wreath and opened it up in a couple of painting apps. I messed around with my paint applications, Brushstroke and Glaze, and most of the filters created some very pretty versions of my wreath. But the final version looked different from all the others. It looked like a party! And it took me by complete surprise. I think that may be why I liked this version the most because it surprised me the most.

There’s plenty more to be discovered in TB&CO's Art Journal Emporium. If you’re intrigued and want to play along and create your own ‘happy accidents’, please consider joining us. The more the merrier! Have a wonderful holiday season!

Quickity Split Collage Christmas Ornaments December 21 2015, 2 Comments

Happy Holidays!  Today I am sharing a little project to make an ornament using the papers from Tangie’s Quickity Split Sweet December Collection.  As a base I used 2 1/2" Wood Round Ornament Cutouts from Craftparts.com.  They have inexpensive wood products that are fun to collage and paint.  I prepared them by sanding slightly.

Then I cut my papers from the Quickity Split Sweet December Collection into randomly sized strips.

Next, I glued the strips in random combinations to each side of the ornaments using Matte Medium. After the medium dried, I gently sanded the edges.

On one side of each ornament, I used the Tim Holtz® Poinsettia Stencil and Dylusions red paint.  I also painted the sides with the same paint.  When dry, I outlined the poinsettia leaves with black pen.  I decided I wanted a little sparkle so I added red Stickles™Glitter Glue on the leaves.  On the back, I left the strips of paper plain and simply added rub on words from Tim Holtz® Remnant Rubs. Finally, I added red jute for hanging.

Below is a close up of one ornament.  The glitter doesn’t show as well on camera, but it adds some holiday sparkle.

Have an artsy holiday season,

For every 6 months that you’re a member of the Art Journal Emporium you gain access to a brand new course packed full of fun new things to learn and in typical Tangie Fashion, LOADS of great freebies.  The inspiration just keeps coming.  You get all the great stuff in the AJE as a member AND you get free bonus material through the Loyalty Program.

The 12 month Exclusive Course was just released for those who have been with the AJE since the beginning.  The course is called “Synthesize” and it’s all about making something out of something else by layering, mixing, and experimenting until it’s a whole new thing.  There are stencils, papers and photos included for you to play and “synthesize” with.  I’m totally stoked over this class, I’m seeing SO many possibilities and the sharing has already started in the classroom with ideas others are getting as well.

Art Journal Emporium - Documenting Your December December 07 2015, 1 Comment

Good Monday everyone! Glenda here on this December day to share with you a simple, no pressure way to document your holiday season - Tangie Baxter’s December Daily Journal. As part of Tangie Baxter & CO’s Art Journal Emporium workshop, Tangie is making a journal page each day in December by simply jotting down her activities, thoughts and memories. That’s it - no need for photos or extra words.

Take a look at a couple of her wonderful pages so far this season!

To make the project even easier, Tangie is using her new Sweet December Printables and Joyous Noel Printables as bases for the pages. Then she’s adding notes, some simple artwork and maybe a little washi tape. All fun and no fuss! The perfect December project!

Thanks for reading! And remember - It’s not too late to document your December!

Art Journal Emporium Gems November 30 2015, 1 Comment

Happy Monday to you all and welcome to another edition of Tangie Baxter & Co’s Art Journal Emporium Gems!  I am sitting here wondering how the month of November came and went so quickly.  It’s hard to believe we are heading into December.

Let’s begin with a page by Ann Lou (Nan) Robkin and her super cute Thanksgiving Day shout out to all the Art Journal Emporium members.  Great extraction Ann.

Ann’s credits: No.11 - The Tangerine Telescope.

My second pick is by Maranda Prio using Kirsten’s Mobile Art Challenge tutorial which was creating a "Mixed-Media" piece on your mobile device.  Her page turned out just wonderful.

Maranda’s Credits:  An app for Android called CircleArtist and it outputs svg files too!

My third pick for this week by Karon Williams. She made an ATC for the Words To Live By Project.

Karon’s credits: Tange's Spinning Daydreams, Deer Opener by Little Rad Trio; Petshop by The Kit Cart; FONT: Comic Sans.

Congratulations and a big thanks to Ann, Maranda and Karon for this week’s gems.   Please leave these three artists some love.  That’s all for today... Be sure to check back next Monday to see the treasures Glena uncovers!

Art Journal Emporium Gems November 23 2015, 1 Comment

Happy Monday! Welcome to another edition of Tangie Baxter & Co’s Art Journal Emporium Gems! Today I have chosen two extraordinarily complimentary pages from last week’s wonderful AJE submissions. Both are art therapy, in a sense, as they deal with some of the difficult times all of Earth’s citizens are experiencing. Most importantly, though, they give us renewed hope for a world filled with beauty and love.

Let’s begin with this beautiful piece from Lynn Johnson. She has somehow filled it with all the sadness, hope and love that has inhabited our world and our hearts of late... And she reminds us that we all have the potential to be “true, loving human souls...”

Lynn’s credits: Tangie's Sweet Harmony, Rebecca's TansyNovember’s Collage Workshop Sheets currently part of The Art Journal Emporium, available at TB&CO in December, Tangie's font Bread and Butter and Eiffel Tower and Paris map overlay from Lynn’e personal digital files.

When I saw Marilyn Curttright’s wonderful page, overflowing with brilliant, multicolored flowers from Tangie Baxter and Rebecca McMeen, I knew immediately that it needed to be the companion piece for Lynne’s page! The flowers, so abundant and insistent, call out to us with beauty and love - and the hope for a brighter tomorrow...

Marilyn’s credits: Flowers from Tangie Baxter & CO.  Additional images from Holliewood, Helly & Paprika. Font is Unknown Caller BTN.

Please leave these two artists some love! And remember to look for the love and beauty throughout our world!

Congratulations and a big thanks to Lynn and Marilyn for gifting us with this week’s gems. That’s all for today... Be sure to check back next Monday to see the treasures Susan uncovers!

November TB&CO Grab Bag November 13 2015, 1 Comment

A little about me: my name is Jan and I’m an aspiring mixed-media artist. I had scrapbooked until most of the scrapbook stores shut down (I loved touching products and mixing up all the bits and pieces). I discovered digital scrapbooking through Somerset Digital Studio magazine and eventually Tangie Baxter’s Art Journal Caravan, and this kept me engaged. But I still missed the touching and getting my hands onto products. Thanks again to Tangie Baxter’s on site workshops, I discovered mixed-media. The monthly Art Journal Emporium's (AJE) Grab Bags contain enough papers and ephemera along with an art doll to create not only lots of digitally created pages, but also fodder for creating mixed-media pages.  Each month I will show you a page created digitally and the how to’s of creating a mixed-media page. Enjoy!

DIGITAL CREATION
“Birds of the Grove.”

MIXED-MEDIA CREATION

Using a combination of digital elements created a focal piece and bits and pieces from the Grab Bag along with various art mediums, created a mixed-media journal page.

Here’s how:

  1. Digitally enhanced Tansy and placed her on an ostrich (Rebecca McMeen’s Parker).
  2. Printed Tansy/Ostrich and a large rose (laser print so that ink doesn’t – alternative print on an inkjet printer and spray with a fixative).
  3. Cut out the Tansy/Ostrich and Rose (or tear if you want that effect).
  4. Watercolor background on a page (used 2 colors [Calypso Teal and Postbox Red] of Dylusions ink spray – or use your favorite watercolors, Caran d’Ache Crayons.
  5. 2-3 sprays of each color on the page, dip brush in water and spread color over page.  Used bright colors so that the rose will stand out. Dry.
  6. Brayered Golden Zinc White over page to tone down.
  7. Glued rose on page leaving room at bottom for journaling/quote.
  8. Glued Tansy/Ostrich on top of rose.
  9. Outlined Tansy with black Uniball Signo pen, Ostrich with gold Uniball Signo pen and rose with dark pink Sharpie.
  10. With a pencil, drew lines for the journaling/quote.  Printed quote, using black Micron 008.
  11. Doodled – separated lines of the quote with dots, lines on rose, Tansy and ostrich.
  12. Added round paint splotches to bottom of rose using Golden Fluid Acrylic Phthalo Green and Quinacridone Magenta (colors to complement the background).
  13. Brushed Faber Castell Glaze over Tansy/Ostrich.
  14. Made a gold circle (using Gold Glitter Paint – painted a circle of paint on a palette and let dry).
  15. Peeled circle off palette and glued onto the empty space of the page.
“Blessed is the Influence”

These products were part of TB&CO Grab Bag #15 {November 2015} which is now available as separate kits: Tangie’s Sweet Harmony and Rebecca’s Tansy.

Grab Bags are only available for a limited time once a month and are priced on a sliding scale, so act fast for the best deal!  For more information visit TB&CO Grab Bags.

By the way, over in the AJE, you can participate in monthly challenges. There are two winners every month. Just upload your digital or mixed-media entry by the end of the month.

Art Journal Emporium Gems November 09 2015, 0 Comments

My fellow Tangie Baxter & CO Art Journal Emporium partner Susan and I have the best job in the world!  On Mondays we will be right here on the blog sharing with you some of the treasures we’ve discovered among the many wonderful AJE Challenge submissions from the previous week. So sit back and take a look! If you enjoy what you see, please take a moment to leave them some love!

Let’s start with this wonderfully vibrant banner created by Jenny for the Day of the Dead Craft Party. I especially love the two end flags!

Jenny’s credits: TB&CO’s Day of the Dead {CUATRO}, Day of the Dead {DOS} and Day of the Dead {UNO}..

Next we have this gorgeous two-page spread submitted by Kay Oft for the AJE October Challenge. Love how she’s peeking through the spider’s web!

Kay’s credits: Rebecca McMeen's “Crispin” and Tangie Baxter's “Spinning Daydreams” which were part of the October TB&CO Grab Bag and will be available as individual kits soon. Also used was Rebecca's I am Raven.

And finally we have a somber piece submitted by Karon Willams for the AJE November Challenge. The juxtaposition of the towers, the birds and the quote simply takes one’s breath away.

Art Journal Emporium - Looking forward to August August 07 2015, 1 Comment

The summer is just flying by, isn’t it? As fun as June and July were, I’m excited for August! Want to know why? Here’s a quick look at what’s going on in the Art Journal Emporium this month.

First of all The Daily Art Dose is up for August. This mini-workshop provides a one-word prompt for the day to inspire a quick artistic creation. Sketch, photograph, paint, sing, dance…whatever works for you. Be sure to post in the class room and if you share on social media, tag your creations with #thedailyartdose and #artjournalemporium.

Next, the new ATC swap is gearing up. Our theme this month is monochromatic cards. All cards must be mailed by the 15th, so there is still time to get in on the swap!

Finally, the new book club has begun for the month focusing on Pam Carriker’s book, Creating Art at the Speed of Life. So far (it just opened today) Tangie posted a picture to get us started.

Mindy joined in with her own example as well.

Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time. ~ Thomas Merton

It’s a great month for art…join us in the emporium!
