Today we will get to know one of Tangie’s talented Crew members. She contributes some really beautiful and helpful projects in the Emporium and on Tangie Baxter & CO’s blog!
Let's meet Karli-Marie:
⦁Name or nickname/handle?
Most people call me Karli, but my full name is Karli-Marie Avril Reyes-Dimovska. To my students it's Ms. Karli, but in writing I am always Karli-Marie. I used to go by KM in digiland and I have also designed under the name KM Ink. Clearly simplicity isn't my forte!
⦁Where do you live?
Cary, North Carolina
⦁Digital, mixed media, or both?
Both! Any! All!
⦁How long have you been making art?
I think expression through art, no matter the medium, is an absolutely essential piece of the human experience. I've been making some form of art as long as I can remember. When I was young it was mostly collages and handmade paper dolls. I moved toward scrapbooking in high school and made the full switch to digital art after college. Around 2007 I started making forum signatures and soon after I transitioned to the exploding niche of digital scrapbooking.
I was introduced to the glory of mixed media goodness in 2010 (thank you Art Journal Caravan!), which has left a lasting impact on my artistic process. During my time in the Peace Corps I was able to spread my wings of creativity and explore everything from website creation to designing a zine for an international non-profit organization. Then, after my return to the states, I felt a pull toward digital design and launched a creative business of my very own. Unfortunately I wasn't able to gain much traction and found it hard to balance working full time and designing regularly, so I put the project on the back burner for the time being. These days I vacillate between mixed media/hybrid projects and 100% digital art. In short, I've been making art just shy of forever.
⦁How did you find Tangie & the Emporium?I've been following Tangie for years. I joined the very first Art Journal Caravan in 2010 and fell head over heals. After a break from mixed media art, I joined the 2014 Caravan and fell in love with Tangie's work all over again. Late last year I was honored to take a place in Tangie's blog team and was introduced to the Emporium (spoiler alert: it's awesome!). The past few months working with Tangie's team and exploring everything the Emporium has to offer has been a super fun experience for me.
⦁Favorite art supply? Ooof. Tough question. I can't pick just one (or two), but if I had to narrow it down I would say for physical art I absolutely need paint, pens, and anything that creates awesome texture; for digital art I love brushes, fonts, and shapes.
⦁Favorite technique? While I love to explore new techniques often, I always seem to come home to blending. It's one of my favorite things about digital vs. physical art. As for mixed media, I'll admit there's a ton of techniques that I haven't broken into yet, but I'm a big fan of layering and creating complex textures.
⦁Favorite embellishing tools? I am a sucker for scatters and splatters!
⦁Favorite color palette? I love color! I tend to gravitate toward brighter color palettes and veer away from pastels and muddy hues. That said, I do think that all colors have their time and place.
⦁What I'm exploring now? My husband and I moved in December of last year, so the majority of the Christmas season was spent knee deep in DIY projects for the new pad. I've had a ton of fun making my Pinterest boards spring to life. But, during the past few weeks, as my interior design projects have started to slow down, I've returned to my love of writing.
⦁Favorite part of the Emporium right now? The Art Journal Caravan, for sure. I am SUPER stoked for its return, it feels like everything's coming back full circle for me. I am also constantly enamored with Tangie's amazing collage sheets.
⦁I love to make... Anything I can get my hands on! I have so many hobbies it's hard to list them all, but here's my attempt to cover most of my bases. I love to make: old furniture new again, hand lettered signs, breathtaking photographs, gourmet meals for my husband, birthday cards for my nieces and nephews, educational resources for preschoolers, crochet hats and scarves, and most of all I love to make people happy.
⦁Beside the Emporium, where can we find you on the internet?
My digital reach is far and wide, but here are a few highlights:

The Art Journal Caravan is back and in full swing inside the Art Journal Emporium. If you have never participated in AJC please check it out and join us on the journey.
There’s been a lot of goodness happening at the Art Journal Emporium this week so let’s get started with this week’s spotlights.
Our first pick is Marilyn Curttright’s “Role Reversal”. Her page is charming and just makes me smile. Love the quote too.
Marilyn’s credits: Art Journal Caravan Itinerary No. 2, Tangie Baxter's Uncaged and Rebecca McMeen’s Ami. The Font is Mongolian Baiti.
Karli-Maire Reyes is in the spotlight this week with her wonderful tribute piece to David Bowie.
Karli-Maire credits: TB&CO’s January 2016 Collage Sheet Collection Workshop Sheets currently part of The Art Journal Emporium.
Next we have Donna Bunch Miller’s page which is just fantastical. I adore the deer mask and pops of color.
Donna’s credits: Art Journal Caravan Itinerary No. 3 along with various paints and a mask.
Last we have Carolyn Summers and her take on the January Challenge using this month’s theme “Uncaged”.
Carolyn’s credits: Art Journal Emporium Monthly Challenge along with napkins, bird cage stamp and a few other elements including word art.

Hi my name is Katrina Rollings and I am a member of the Art Journal Emporium creative crew.
I am so pleased the Art Journal Caravan is back. This will be my 4th Caravan I will have taken part in and I have really enjoyed being part of all the others, so inspiring!
Our theme for January is Uncaged. Now some of you might already know I am a parrot lover, my online name is Arty Parrot, which is also the name of my blog. I have been keeping little parrots for over 20 years now and have loved every second. Our current feathered family member is Dexter, a grey male cockatiel who was found on our neighbours roof. I live in England, so that was hardly the place for a parrot. We took him in and as nobody claimed him he became one of the family. He loves to move from room to room with me in his cage for safety. He loves it up in my craft room the most but when we are in the lounge with him his cage is open and he has his freedom. We have done this with all our parrots over the years and so to me the word Uncaged conjures up the fun and often chaos when we had 4 cockatiels who all loved to chew the wallpaper and anything else they could get their beaks on, that ensues when our little feathered friends have their free time. Luckily Dexter just likes to sit on the back of the sofa and watch the TV and boss us around.
For this month’s journal page I wanted to portray my love of my parrots and the fun we have had with them all. So here is my mixed media journal page Uncaged, using 2 of this month's collage sheets and the tinted fragments from January’s Art Journal Caravan itinerary as my colour guide.
- First I printed off sheet 10 from January’s collage sheets.
- Tore off a tiny piece of the left hand side of it.
-
Added a strip of paper from my paper collection to fill in the gap (my journal is square so it didn’t fit)
- I wanted to blend the new paper into the collage sheet so I took my watercolours and added some drips.
- I added some colour around the cage and the outside of the page using my Aqua Monolith watercolour woodless pencils.
- I added my parrots next, I printed out sheet number 9 at half size and cut out the 3 parrots.
- Then added colour around the birds using my watercolour pencils
- I felt the area to the left of the cage was a little bare so I used a peacock feather mask and some inks to add another layer, using the watercolour pencils to add more depth.
- To add the word Uncaged I decided to die cut the letters out of black card and then used my watercolour pencils to add some colour around the outside of the letters.
There you have it. My first Art Journal Caravan page for 2016, can’t wait to see what's coming next!
The Collage Workshop is included in the Art Journal Emporium and then available for sale in the TB&CO shop the following month.
Previous Collage Sheet Worshops can be found here: Collage Sheets by Tangie.

Here’s a sneak peak at the January 2016 Mobile Art Challenge from the Art Journal Emporium. My intention was to create some sparkly fairy magic to sprinkle over the new year. This month’s tutorial focused on the Repix app. I also used Mextures, Snapseed and ShockmyPic.
Now, I want to disclose something. I wandered around in the iPhone app desert with this piece for a long time. I really struggled. Didn’t like this. Didn’t like that. That didn’t work. No, not that. That’s not right. Blah, blah, blah.
I’m not disclosing this to get sympathy or to beg for compliments. I’m sharing because I think it’s valuable to be honest about the process of creating. Not just the step by step, but also the stuff that circles around in our brains when we’re making choices.
For me, there’s always a fine line between making choices and triggering the dreaded “Inner Critic” or ‘Oscar’ as I like to call him. Oscar and I went round and round on this one. And, guess what? That’s okay. Because I’ve learned something incredibly valuable from Tangie and all the members of the Art Journal Emporium.
Watching Tangie’s videos and seeing her change directions, make different choices and hearing her say things like, “Yeah. I like that.” or “I’m not thrilled with that. Let me try this. Oh! That’s better. That’s what I want. Yeah, I like that.” is so helpful.
She shares her process and by doing that she’s shown all of us how to create a safe space for our own creative process. And being part of that safe space has helped me embrace curiosity and create a safe space within myself. So it’s okay for Oscar and me to duke it out because I know that, if we keep going, we’ll arrive at a happy place eventually.
A supportive, encouraging, and honest community has made all the difference for me. If you’re like me, and you prowl artist’s blogs and enjoy looking at creative magazines, you may think to yourself that making art is for other special creative people. I loved looking at the work created by so many mixed media and mobile artists and I wanted so badly to create something ‘like that’, but I never tried. I didn’t know where to begin. Finally, I was brave enough to take the leap and in 2012, I joined the Art Journal Caravan, and last year, the Art Journal Emporium. There’s been no looking back since. I truly can’t express how valuable this community has been to me and how grateful I am to be a part of it. I hope 2016 is the year, you’ll take the leap and join us.

Welcome friends! Glenda here to share with you another edition of the Tangie Baxter & CO Art Journal Emporium Gems... Today’s selections all center around the theme “Uncaged,” which is also this month’s focus for the Art Journal Caravan. And if you haven’t taken part in the AJC, I highly recommend it! There are several ways to participate this year - one could be just right for you!
Our first Gallery Gem is an amazing page created by Diane Foulds. Her wonderful Phoenix in mixed media seems to rise above the page - and take all of us with it! I love the the symbolism of the Phoenix rising and the cage staying behind.
Diane’s credits include TB&CO’s January 2016 Collage Sheet Collection Workshop Sheets currently part of The Art Journal Emporium, available at TB&CO in February, a poem by Maya Angelou and her own hand-drawn Phoenix.
Next we have a lovely page by Pam McKenzie. The bird seems to be bursting through the barriers that were once in its way, and flying excitedly out into the big, big world. The elegant flowers almost - but not quite - draw our gaze away from Pam herself, who appears in the gilded cage.
Pam’s credits include images from TB&CO’s January 2016 AJC goodies (http://shoptangiebaxter.com), as well as some washi tape and a photo of herself.
And finally we have a curious page by Marilyn Curttright. Each time I look at it, my perspective changes... Who is caged? The tigers? The woman? Both? Are the tigers watching as the woman uses the bubbles to float away from her captivity? And from a certain angle, it almost looks like one of the tigers is trying to pop the bubbles on the other side of the fence. This piece keeps me coming back for more...
Marilyn’s credits include images from TB&CO’s Uncaged and Uncaged Brushes, as well as images from Rebecca McMeen: http://shoptangiebaxter.com.
Thank you to Diane, Pam and Marilyn for sharing their sparkling Gems with us! Please leave them some love!

For those of us who have been members of the Art Journal Emporium since its inception a year ago, it is no surprise to hear that we have a wide range of artists in our community. We have digital artists and mixed media artists and some that do both. We are younger and older. We are beginners and more experienced. We might live anywhere in the United States or somewhere else in the world. The wonderful thing is that despite our skills or experience, we are a kind and supportive community chock-full of creativity! Combine a group of amazing people with our awesome teacher, leader, and co-creator--the inspiring Tangie Baxter--and you will find a great place to learn, grow, and create...aka the Art Journal Emporium!
Over the next several months I will be introducing you to some of our members in a twice-monthly Spotlight. To break the ice, I will start by telling you about ME!
My name is Jennifer. I live south of Nashville, Tennessee. I consider myself to be a "baby" artist. I have always been "crafty," but I took my very first art class in my 30s. Really! It has only been in the last 2 years that I have been experimenting with mixed media, which is incredibly challenging for me. When I first found Tangie and her work I was excited to find someone so fun and encouraging. She makes it look easy, and really breaks things down so that I'm not too afraid to give it a shot.
I am enjoying trying new things. I love collaging and playing with paint. I have a natural love for techy stuff, so in 2016 I plan to explore digital art using some of Tangie's awesome resources. I might even go wild and play with some digital work on my phone. There is a great series of tutorials going on in the AJE to get me started. I know it's safe there to post pictures of my experiments and get positive feedback.
A few more factoids:
- Favorite art supply: repositionable glue stick
- Favorite technique: spreading paint with an old gift card
- Favorite embellishing tools: white gel pen and washi tape
- Favorite color palette: turquoise and ocean tones
- What I'm exploring now: layering
- Favorite part of the Emporium right now: GORGEOUS collage sheets
- I love to make: hats!
Some of My Projects:

Mixed media in my art journal planner
Drawing in my art journal planner

You can find me at the Art Journal Emporium, JenLovesHats@gmail.com, or I'm relaunching my blog at www.BeautifulAliveCoaching.com
By the way, now is a great time to join the AJE! Tangie has some incredible stuff planned for 2016!
