Art Journal Emporium Loyalty Program December 14 2015, 1 Comment

Hey everyone!!  Carolyn here, Art Journal Emporium Crew Member, to tell you about the latest installment of the AJE Loyalty Program.  What’s that?  You didn’t know that there’s a loyalty program?  Well you are in for a treat.

For every 6 months that you’re a member of the Art Journal Emporium you gain access to a brand new course packed full of fun new things to learn and in typical Tangie Fashion, LOADS of great freebies.  The inspiration just keeps coming.  You get all the great stuff in the AJE as a member AND you get free bonus material through the Loyalty Program.

The 12 month Exclusive Course was just released for those who have been with the AJE since the beginning.  The course is called “Synthesize” and it’s all about making something out of something else by layering, mixing, and experimenting until it’s a whole new thing.  There are stencils, papers and photos included for you to play and “synthesize” with.  I’m totally stoked over this class, I’m seeing SO many possibilities and the sharing has already started in the classroom with ideas others are getting as well.

Synthesize Loyalty Reward for The Art Journal Emporium

Here are just a few of the experiments some of the students have posted in the classroom:

by Liz Waechter, Catherine (CathyT) and Anne Lou (Nan) Robkin

I just love seeing how other people grab onto something and run with it.

How many months have you been an AJE member?  Please leave a comment and let us know, be loud and proud!!

Winter Wonderland 3D Mixed Media Canvas December 12 2015, 3 Comments

While the ever-creative alter ego that you've come to know on this blog is often found after hours elbow deep in paint, washi tape, and digital art products, my days are actually spent teaching four year olds at a local preschool (where I assure you I am also doused in paint!). I care deeply for the artistic process and truly believe that art has a healing power all its own, so in my classroom we are always creating beautiful things.

This year our passion for creating during this time of giving has culminated in my school participating in a silent art auction with all proceeds being donated to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. I couldn't ask for a more perfect storm of charity and beauty this holiday season. For the event, each classroom is decorating a canvas and teachers are encouraged to do the same.

Naturally, I have chosen to use some beautiful products from Tangie Baxter and Co for my winter wonderland mixed media canvas and I am super stoked to share my piece with you today.

Supplies:

  • Art Journal Caravan™ 2013 {December Collection} by Tangie Baxter
  • Acrylic paint & brushes
  • Anything to create texture (I used bubble wrap and tulle)
  • Embellishments (I used wooden ornaments and gems)
  • A canvas (watch for sales and coupons at your local craft store)
  • Adhesives (I used a satin glue and adhesive dots

Staring down a blank canvas can be a daunting task, but rest assured, there is no right or wrong answer when it comes to art. If you make a mistake... there are no mistakes!

In this case I knew I wanted to create something winter themed, so I started by downloading the December collection and looking through the goodies. I was immediately drawn to the hexagons and the faded musical note paper. Once I knew which direction I was headed it was time to start creating my base. Bring on the paint!

I wasn't going for a uniform look, so I used a bunch of different brushes and rollers and shades to create a fun texture. I mixed my azure blue with white to create a few different variations of the same color. Not seeking perfection here, just a good base to jump off from. Next, I started working in Tangie's digital products and adding more texture.

First, I printed out the products I wanted to use and positioned them on the canvas using a basic decoupage technique (read more about my latest foray into the world of decoupage). Next, I painted up some bubble wrap and ripped up some extra tulle, just for funsies! Ah yes, now we have a lovely balanced and textured base to start embellishing.

I found some pretty wooden snowflake ornaments at my local craft store that I knew would work perfectly on this project. I also picked up some felt table scatter and gems to give the project a little sparkle.

In the next step I admittedly bit off more than I could chew. With the gorgeous elements and papers I printed from the December Collection I attempted to transfer the images onto the wooden snowflakes. I watched some internet videos and it seemed like a pretty simple process, only I did not take into account that I wasn't dealing with a simple block of wood on which to transfer the image, but an intricately designed snowflake.

On the bright side, the process wasn't a complete failure. I was able to transfer a few image on to the less ornate ornaments, though in the end I'm not sure the effect was worth the effort this time around. Lesson learned: Keep it simple!

Lastly, I attached the embellishments with adhesive dots, popped on a few gems, and there she is: a unique mixed media three dimensional winter wonderland canvas!

I cannot wait to see what the other teachers come up with, their creativity never ceases to inspire me. What winter decorations have you created this year? Share with us in the comments.

December TB&CO Grab Bag December 11 2015, 1 Comment

Happy December!  This month the grab bag features the color palette dark red and medium green. I was inspired to create a red page and a green page. With the amazing snowflakes, I just had to make Ruby snowflakes in a snowy landscape. Here are two digitally created pages and the how to’s of creating a mixed-media page. Enjoy!

DIGITAL CREATION

Ruby’s Winter Wonderland

Evergreen Glad Tidings

MIXED-MEDIA CREATION

Using a combination of digital elements created a focal piece and bits and pieces from the Grab Bag along with various art mediums, created a mixed-media journal page.

Here’s how:

  1. Paint a background with a mixture of green acrylic paint, glitter paint and Golden® acrylic glazing liquid.  Dry.
  2. Mix gesso with glitter paint and platinum acrylic paint.  Swirl onto the lower section of page.
  3. Sprinkle glitter on wet gesso.  Dry (overnight).
  4. Digitally create Ruby snowflakes.
    1. Enlarge snowflake, reduce size of Ruby so she fits inside snowflake.  Make at least three.
    2. Print so that size of each snowflake is approximately 2” X 2” (I printed on textured paper for more texture)
    3. Cut out each snowflake.
  5. Glue snowflakes on page.
  6. Either cut out a tree shape from glittery paper or cut out a christmas tree from a magazine or card. Glue into “snow” drifts.
  7. Splatter page with white paint.
  8. Add text or journaling.

Ruby Snowflake

December Grab Bag - Festive Christmas Tags Project December 10 2015, 1 Comment

Hello, let me introduce myself, my name is Katrina Rollings. I am a member of the TB&CO crew. I live in the southwest of England with my wonderful husband and very cute little parrot called Dexter who loves to come up into my craft room with me and watch me craft.

I love my Art Journaling, always mixed media cut and paste, but I also love to use my digital kits in all sorts of other ways too. As I am completely addicted to my crafting, if I can make something myself I like to give it a try. One of the things I like to make for my family and friends at Christmas are individual tags for their presents.

So for my project today I have made 4 different Christmas tags using this month's bundle - Tangie's Evergreen Kit (part of this month’s grab bag.  Grab Bags are only available for a limited time once a month and are priced on a sliding scale, so act fast for the best deal!  For more information visit TB&CO Grab Bags.)  I also used Tangie’s Christmastime Kit.

For all my tags I used a standard shipping tag as the base but you can use whatever you have on hand or just cut a tag shape out of card. I prised off the hole reinforcers that come on the shipping tags and saved them for later along with the piece of string.

Rudolf Tag:

  • Print & cover the tag with Tangie’s Evergreen Kit paper 5.
  • Print, cut out and adhere the Rudolf die cut, red striped ribbon, thin red bow,  Merry Christmas swag, washi tape and button from the Christmastime Kit on the tag.
  • Put the hole reinforcer back on the tag.
  • Add some ink around the edges, some Neocolour II crayon and a touch of glitter, well it is Christmas!
  • Then Rudolf just has to have a bright red sticky gem for his nose.

Father Christmas Tag:

  • Print & cover shipping tag with the small green spot paper from the Christmastime Kit, paper 4.
  • Print & cut out Father Christmas, Merry Christmas swag, Ho Ho Ho boarder and tied ribbon from the Christmastime Kit.
  • Put the hole reinforcer back on the tag.
  • Add some ink around the edges, some Neocolour II crayon and a touch of glitter.
  • Add a shiny gem on the end of his hat.

Bauble Tag:

  • Print & cover shipping tag with the red paper from the Christmastime Kit, paper 1.
  • Print & cut out vintage baubles from the Evergreen kit.
  • Put the hole reinforcer back on the tag.
  • Add some ink around the edges, some Neocolour II crayon and a touch of glitter.

Christmas Tree Tag :

  • Print & cover shipping tag with paper from the Christmastime Kit, paper 7.
  • Print & cut out trees also from the Christmastime Kit.
  • Print & cut out “Christmas” and “Tree" from the Evergreen Kit.
  • To spell “oh” print out the Ho Ho Ho border from the Christmastime Kit then cut and piece the letters to reform “oh”.
  • Put the hole reinforcer back on the tag.
  • Add some ink around the edges, some Neocolour II crayon and a touch of glitter.
  • Add a silver star to the top of one of the trees.

Well those are my Festive Christmas Tags. I hope you enjoy my project and will giving them a try yourself. They would be a great project to do with children too.

Have a very Happy Christmas,

love Katrina

Art Journal Emporium - Documenting Your December December 07 2015, 1 Comment

Good Monday everyone! Glenda here on this December day to share with you a simple, no pressure way to document your holiday season - Tangie Baxter’s December Daily Journal. As part of Tangie Baxter & CO’s Art Journal Emporium workshop, Tangie is making a journal page each day in December by simply jotting down her activities, thoughts and memories. That’s it - no need for photos or extra words.

Take a look at a couple of her wonderful pages so far this season!

To make the project even easier, Tangie is using her new Sweet December Printables and Joyous Noel Printables as bases for the pages. Then she’s adding notes, some simple artwork and maybe a little washi tape. All fun and no fuss! The perfect December project!

Art Journal Emporium Gems November 30 2015, 1 Comment

Happy Monday to you all and welcome to another edition of Tangie Baxter & Co’s Art Journal Emporium Gems!  I am sitting here wondering how the month of November came and went so quickly.  It’s hard to believe we are heading into December.

Let’s begin with a page by Ann Lou (Nan) Robkin and her super cute Thanksgiving Day shout out to all the Art Journal Emporium members.  Great extraction Ann.

Ann’s credits: No.11 - The Tangerine Telescope.

My second pick is by Maranda Prio using Kirsten’s Mobile Art Challenge tutorial which was creating a "Mixed-Media" piece on your mobile device.  Her page turned out just wonderful.

Maranda’s Credits:  An app for Android called CircleArtist and it outputs svg files too!

My third pick for this week by Karon Williams. She made an ATC for the Words To Live By Project.

Karon’s credits: Tange's Spinning Daydreams, Deer Opener by Little Rad Trio; Petshop by The Kit Cart; FONT: Comic Sans.

Congratulations and a big thanks to Ann, Maranda and Karon for this week’s gems.   Please leave these three artists some love.  That’s all for today... Be sure to check back next Monday to see the treasures Glena uncovers!

Quick & Easy Thanksgiving Place Settings November 26 2015, 1 Comment

Are you in the market for a quick and easy way to brighten your Thanksgiving table? Look no farther!

It's Thanksgiving morning, the pies are all baked, the turkey's in the oven, and your company is on the way. Before you pop open that bottle of wine, why not pop open Photoshop for a quick DIY project to spruce up your Thanksgiving decor instead?

Just throw open a basic template, like the one I created below, add some paper and embellishments, print, cut, and repeat!

For this project I used Autumn's Poetry by Tangie Baxter (but any of her amazing fall kits will do!!).

You can make the project as simple or ornate as you like, but if you're in a real hurry I would take advantage of Tangie's clusters (love them!) because they do so much of the work for you.

Now you can just sit back and relax, uncork that bottle of vino, and bask in the glory of your friends and family admiring your decorative prowess. Happy Thanksgiving all!

Have another amazing quick and easy Thanksgiving project? Share with us in the comments below.
